proudly decorating his first tree...
hanging the lights...snowflakes on the ceiling...santa with the red and green tree...decorating every little bit of my classroom...
taping up the origami christmas trees...

more practice with congruency.

homework: congruent triangles WS #1-19 odd.

we will spend one more day on this, and then we will move on to centers of triangles!

congruent triangles.

today we took notes on congruent triangles. if you had trouble with this, please look at the website i posted on the right under UNIT 3 practice.

HW: Congruent Triangles WS #10-15

don't forget to bring in canned goods for the NHS canned food drive.

thanks to everyone who came to help decorate my classroom for Christmas!! i'll put up those pictures tomorrow!!!

lots of triangle theorems.

tomorrow you will have a quiz on the triangle theorems we've discussed (so far).
1. triangle sum theorem
2. triangle inequality theorem
3. side-angle inequality theorem
4. exterior-angle theorem

make sure you have completed your review of triangle theorems. we will review for a little bit, and then you will take the "show me what you know..."

Thursday, November 18, 2010

side-angle inequality.

we discussed another triangle theorem today: side-angle inequality...large side is opposite large angle. small side is opposite small angle.

5.5 practice #2-8 even: write the sides and angles in order from smallest to largest.

congrats to 1st period for winning this week's class competition!!! great job attending tutorial and solving the weekly challenge problem. (and thanks allyssa for the expo markers!) you all will have 15 minutes of free time during class and will be given a special treat!

triangle inequalities.

after working with AngLegs yesterday, we answered the question: can any 3 legs make a triangle? our answer was "NO!"

we discovered the triangle inequality theorem which says that the sum of two sides of a triangle must be greater than the third side.

for homework, you are practicing using the triangle inequality theorem...
HW: triangle inequalities #1-10 (front) and #1-7 (back)

polygon comic book.

just wanted to share one of the comic books that a group did on the computer! enjoy!!

Monday, November 15, 2010

now to triangles.

for those who didn't turn in their comic books, you must turn them in tomorrow. you will be deducted points for it being late.

tomorrow we will be focus in on triangles. all week we will look at theorems involving triangles. you will know everything about triangles by the time we're finished :)

"the adventures of Poly Gon."

this weekend, you need to be working on your polygon comic books! be creative with your polygon superhero!!! talk to your group members over the weekend to make sure you're getting everything finished! here's the assignment...

The Plot: Draw a comic book about a superhero named "Poly Gon" who lives on the planet "Geometry." An evil villain named "Non Poly" is trying to destroy everything on the planet that looks like Poly Gon and ultimately wants to defeat Poly Gon once and for all. Poly Gon must use his super powers to save himself and his beloved planet Geometry.

Page 1: The Superhero Draw the superhero and describe what the superhero looks like.

Page 2: The Power Describe the super power he possesses.

Page 3: The Villain Draw the villain and describe what the villain looks like.

Page 4: The Destruction Explain the different objects that Non Poly destroys. This leads him to Poly Gon.

Page 5: The Attack Describe how Poly Gon uses his powers to attack Non Poly and to then defeat him.

Page 6: The End Describe how life on planet Geometry is now.

Important: Your comic book must be creative, neat, and colored. You must use the following vocabulary words somewhere in your dialogue in order to receive maximum credit:

1. Angle

2. Side

3. Polygon

4. Regular Polygon

5. Irregular Polygon

6. Convex Polygon

7. Concave Polygon

8. Interior Angles

9. Exterior Angles

10. Congruent

what's your angle?

homework: polygon review worksheet and study for your "show me what you know..."

you need to know how to find the sum of interior/exterior angles and how to find the measure of one interior/exterior angle. study, study, study!! this is the first quiz of UNIT 3, and i want all of you to do great! practice finding the angles of triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, octagons, nonagons, decagons, ...

congrats to 3rd period for winning this week's class competition. you won because of all those points you got for having the highest test average on the UNIT 2 test! way to go!

the first person to answer this question (by commenting on this blog or e-mailing me) will get candy tomorrow: how many sides does a megagon have?

interior and exterior.

we continued working with polygons today and discovered the formulas for one interior angle of a regular polygon, the sum of exterior angles of a polygon, and one exterior angle of a regular polygon.

1st period: 5.7 practice #10-23

2nd & 3rd period: 5.7 practice #19-29

i will have tutorial tomorrow after school. please plan on staying in order to review for your "show me what you know..." on friday.

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

poly, poly, polygons.

today we started UNIT 3...our final unit of the semester! we took notes on polygons and discovered the formula for the sum of interior angles.

homework: 5.7 practice #1-9

since we did not have tutorial today after school (i had to coach the first swim meet of the season), you can come tomorrow after school for tutorial!

Monday, November 8, 2010

and now we begin UNIT 3.

homework: UNIT 2 standards packets (each of you received a standards packet with worksheets involving the standards you did not master on the retest.)

UNIT 3 starts tomorrow! this is our final UNIT of Math 1A. you'll be doing UNIT 4, 5, and 6 next semester!

UNIT 3 is a fresh start. it's a geometry unit. we'll be working with polygons this week and then looking more specifically at triangles next week.

tomorrow you'll get a new table of contents, a new seat in the classroom, and a new UNIT 3 standards checklist. finish this semester strong!!!

Saturday, November 6, 2010

retest on monday.

if you did not master each of the UNIT 2 standards, you will be retesting on monday. make sure you finish your try again, try again (test corrections). study your test...learn from your mistakes! you will only be retesting the standards that you did not master.

Thursday, November 4, 2010

test day = no homework :)

tomorrow you'll be getting your tests back!! we will be going over them and making test corrections.

congrats to 2nd period for winning the weekly class competition!! you will have some free time tomorrow and will be getting a special treat!

reviewing UNIT 2.

for homework, do MM1A2 e #1-18. this standard, which involves rational expressions, should be the freshest on your mind since we just finished covering it! look at your notes, handouts, and homeworks to complete these problems.

we are out of school tomorrow because of election day! please take some time tomorrow to study for your UNIT 2 Test on thursday. work out problems from MM1A2 a-d for extra practice.
