master those standards.

homework this weekend is to work on those packets that i gave you. (if you didn't get one, then you've mastered all the UNIT 1 standards! 3rd period, you'll get your packets on monday.) each page of the packet deals with a standard you have not mastered. these problems were created by some of your classmates! do some of the packet this weekend. the whole thing is due on friday.

homecoming week is this week! every day is a different spirit day. if you dress up for the spirit days, i'll give you a point towards the class competition! i forget what the spirit day for monday is...anyone know? post on this blog if you do...

adding it all up.

today we started adding polynomials. don't forget: you can only combine like terms! read your notes to review like and unlike terms.

HW: Adding and Subtracting Polynomials #2, 3, 7, 9 only

if you need additional help, look at these websites...

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

poly poly polynomials.

HW: p. 59 #1-6 (in your textbook!!)

degree:
coefficients:
leading coefficient:
constant:

look in your notes for help!

number tricks.

HW: Polynomial Terms
write 4 examples of each: 1) monomial 2) binomial 3) trinomial 4) polynomial with 4 or more terms

in class today, we did a few "number tricks" (when actually it's just a little algebra involved!). here they are so you can use them on your friends, parents, or siblings.

Lucky Number Seven: Choose a number, any number. Add 3. Multiply by 2. Add 8. Divide by 2. Subtract the number you started with. What'd you get??

Terrible Two's: Begin with any number. I mean, any number at all. Add 2. Multiply by 10. Subtract 5. Divide by 5. Subtract 3. Now divide by the number you started with. And your answer is??

What's your phone number?: Using a calculator, enter the first three digits of your phone number (not the area code). Multiply by 80. Add 1. Multiply by 250. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number to your answer. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again. Subtract 250. Divide by 2. What's your final answer? Recognize it??

***if you create your own number trick, i'll give you some extra credit!***

first day of school on monday.

monday is a new, fresh start. with UNIT 1 and all its functions behind us, we are moving on to UNIT 2: algebra investigations. so when you get to class on monday morning, we are pretending its the first day of school. you'll get a new table of contents and a new standards checklist. we will go over class rules again, and i'll remind you of the class expectations. if you struggled last unit, this is a new start for you!

homework this weekend (for 1st and 3rd only): UNIT 2 Vocabulary. look up these words in your math 1 textbook. if they aren't in there, find a definition on the web!

also, if you still did not master all nine UNIT 1 standards, you will have to attend tutorial sessions this week to retest these.

Thursday, September 16, 2010

try again, try again

homework: finish your "try again, try again" (UNIT 1 Test corrections) and make sure your Unit 1 Standards Checklist is completely filled out!

tomorrow you will be taking your UNIT 1 Retest during class. you will retest each UNIT 1 standard that you did not master. my hope is that we will have all of our standards mastered by tomorrow! if you still don't succeed in mastering all nine Unit 1 standards, you will have to come to tutorial to work on these. we will be moving on to UNIT 2 on Monday!

ohhh, i almost forgot. 2nd period won this week's class competition! (they won by just one point!) you will get your reward in class tomorrow.

and don't forget, you can get points towards next week's class competition if you wear red and black tomorrow...i love school spirit...for druid hills and UGA!!! :)

if you do your homework, then you will make a good grade

on friday, we wrapped up Unit 1 by defining lots of "logic" words: conjecture, inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, counterexample, indirect proof, conditional statement, if-then form, hypothesis, conclusion, negate, converse, inverse, and contrapositive. if you were absent, you need to write these definitions from your textbook. each of these words, you need to know. memorize them. learn them.

1st period:
no homework for you. congrats on winning your 1st class competition!

2nd and 3rd period: HW: Logic
write down this conditional statement: "if an angle is a right angle, then its measure is 90 degrees."
tell whether its true or false. then write the converse, inverse, and contrapositive and write its truth value.

some websites to check out for additional help on logic: http://hotmath.com/hotmath_help/topics/converse-inverse-contrapositive.html

***first person to e-mail me or post on this blog the converse, inverse, and contrapositive of this post's title will get candy on monday!***

2, 4, 6, 8...homework is really great

finish HW: sequences worksheet (#5-10). decide whether the function is arithmetic or geometric. then create the sequence equations. #8 and #9 are a little tricky. you will get extra credit if you get these correct!

congrats to 1st period! you won the weekly class competition!!! you will be rewarded in class tomorrow. :)

looking ahead: UNIT 1 Test on wednesday, september 15! parents: make sure your child begins studying for this test. it is worth 40% of his/her grade.

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

follow the pattern

HW: Sequences Worksheet #1-4 on front and the toothpick activity on the back.

look at your notes if you need help. if you need additional help, please come to tutorial tomorrow morning at 7:30am! see you bright and early!

***check out the link on the right: sequences practice quiz. if you do this quiz and either print out the finished quiz or write down the correct answers on a separate sheet of paper, i will give you 5 bonus points on your next quiz!***

finish transforming

we took our 3rd "show me what you know..." today. your last function transformation assignment is to create your own function equations for each parent function. this is outlined on your worksheet "make your own function equations."

in your free time, check out some of the websites on the right for extra practice!

Thursday, September 2, 2010

it's true...no homework this weekend!!!

today we reviewed transformations (went over homework, did matching activity, and played function charades). you will be quizzed over transformations on tuesday. look over your notes this weekend! but you have no "official" homework assignment.

if you received makeup work to pull up your grade, you need to be doing that this weekend. the first 4.5 week grading period will be over soon.

have a great labor day weekend!
